Sam Cooke was tragically assassinated in a Los Angeles motel by a woman. Despite its poor chart performance, it became an anthem for the civil rights struggle. In 2007, the National Recording Registry selected it for preservation. It was chosen because it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
