‘Roxanne’ – The Police

“That song has been the turnaround for us.” Stewart Copeland told Rolling Stone. Sting had the idea for the song while walking around Paris’ red-light district after a cancelled show, thinking what it might be like to fall in love with a prostitute. A banner in the band’s Paris hotel lobby promoting the play Cyrano de Bergerac, which featured a heroine named Roxanne, inspired the title.

‘Tiny Dancer’ – Elton John

Lyricist Taupin wrote this song in 1971 about his first wife, Maxine Feibelman, who worked as a seamstress for John’s band and obviously married a musician. Paul Buckmaster’s strings and Rick Wakeman, who would soon join prog-rockers Yes and play organ, helped John’s soaring melody. The song “Tiny Dancer” was reintroduced in the 2000 film Almost Famous.
