Captain Reynolds stood at the edge of the ship, eyes fixed on the polar bear below as he waited for Steward to return with the radio. The bear was now pacing restlessly on the raft, even striking the water with one of its massive paws. Was it trying to signal something? Point them in a direction? The captain couldn’t make sense of it. He knew a fair bit about polar bears—after all, they had been his favorite animal growing up—but never in all his reading or documentaries had he encountered behavior like this. It was unlike anything he’d seen or heard before.
